What do they have in common?

Both the pressure sensor and the weight sensor are part of the vehicle’s safety system. Their main objective is to inform the car’s computer whether the seat is occupied so that systems such as the airbag and seatbelt reminder can function correctly.

What is a pressure sensor?

The pressure sensor is a flexible sheet installed beneath the seat upholstery.

When a person sits down, the pressure applied to the surface modifies the sensor’s electrical properties, sending a signal to the vehicle’s control unit.

Its main function is to detect the presence of an occupant.

What is a weight sensor?

The weight sensor uses different technologies, such as load cells or strain gauges, to measure the force exerted on the seat.

Thanks to this, it can calculate the occupant’s approximate weight with greater precision.

This information allows the vehicle to classify the occupant and decide how the safety systems should respond.

Which do modern vehicles use?

It depends on the manufacturer and the vehicle’s year.

  • More economical models often use pressure sensors to detect seat occupancy.
  • Many modern vehicles incorporate weight sensors or even combine several technologies to classify the occupant more accurately.

These systems can distinguish between:

Can they work together?
