The Clutch Flywheel
The clutch flywheel, also known as the flywheel or engine flywheel, is an essential component in a car’s transmission system. It is a heavy metal disc attached to the crankshaft and serves several key functions in the engine’s operation.
Function:
On one hand, it helps maintain the rotational inertia of the engine, preventing sudden vibrations and ensuring smoother motion. Additionally, the clutch disc rests on its surface, allowing the engine’s power to be transmitted to the gearbox and, ultimately, to the wheels. Without the flywheel, the clutch system would not function properly.
Another important role is aiding in the vehicle’s startup. On the edge of the flywheel is a toothed ring where the starter motor engages to start the combustion engine.
In conclusion, although it often goes unnoticed, the clutch flywheel is a fundamental part that ensures the smoothness, efficiency, and continuity of the engine and transmission operation.
