Transmission Oil
Transmission oil is an essential component for the proper functioning of any vehicle with a gearbox, whether manual or automatic. Its main function is to lubricate, cool, and protect the internal parts of the transmission, preventing premature wear and ensuring smooth and efficient gear shifts.
Function of Transmission Oil
- Component Lubrication Reduces friction between gears, bearings, and other moving parts.
- Heat Dissipation The transmission generates high temperatures, and the oil helps maintain a stable temperature.
- Corrosion Protection Forms a protective film that prevents oxidation and wear.
- Internal Cleaning Carries impurities and metal particles to the filter, keeping the gearbox clean.
- Performance Enhancement In automatic transmissions, the oil also helps generate the hydraulic pressure needed for gear changes.
Types of Transmission Oil
There are several types of oil, each designed for a specific type of gearbox and specific needs:
-
ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid)
- Designed for automatic transmissions.
- Contains special additives to withstand high temperatures and ensure smooth shifting.
- Typical colors: red or pink.
- Common examples: Dexron, Mercon, ATF+4.
-
Manual Transmission Fluid (MTF)
- More viscous than ATF.
- Contains additives to protect gears, synchronizers, and shafts.
- Usually amber or golden in color.
-
CVT Transmission Oil
- Specially formulated for continuously variable transmissions.
- Maintains controlled friction for internal belts or chains.
- Not interchangeable with conventional ATF.
-
DCT/DSG Transmission Oil
- Designed for dual-clutch transmissions.
- Withstands high pressure and temperature, ensuring ultra-fast gear changes.
- Key tip: Using the wrong oil can damage the transmission and lead to costly repairs. Always check the manufacturer's specifications.
Oil Lifespan and Replacement
The replacement interval depends on the type of transmission, driving style, and manufacturer recommendations:
- Automatic transmissions: every 40,000 to 60,000 km.
- Manual transmissions: every 60,000 to 80,000 km.
- CVT and DCT transmissions: every 30,000 to 50,000 km.
Ignoring oil changes can lead to overheating, gear wear, rough shifting, or even total transmission failure.
Important
Transmission oil degrades over time due to:
- High temperatures → loss of viscosity and protection.
- Metal residue buildup → increased friction.
- Moisture contamination → accelerated corrosion.
That’s why checking the oil level and condition is just as important as replacing it. Dark oil with a burnt smell or metallic particles is a sign that it needs immediate replacement.
Transmission oil is vital for your vehicle’s durability, efficiency, and performance. Choosing the correct type, replacing it on time, and keeping it in good condition will extend the life of your gearbox and prevent expensive repairs.
